Let’s be honest here, if we had to pick one word to describe the lyrics of ZAYN’s Mind of Mine, we probably wouldn’t go with deep. We’d pick something like sexy, or hot, or intense. But sexy waters run deep as the old saying goes, and we’re here to show you that Zayn Malik’s number 1 debut album actually does contain some quite emotionally charged lyrics.

iT’s YoU

“I won’t, I won’t, I won’t,

cover the scars

I’ll let ’em bleed

So my silence

So my silence won’t

Be mistaken for peace”

While iT’s YoU is hauntingly beautiful from start to finish and Zayn’s vocals are on a whole new level of perfect that probably did not exist before Mind of Mine was released, these lines are by far the most emotional lyrics of the song. Especially the part about silence being mistaken for peace must hit close to home for someone who spent years in a band that wasn’t making the style of music he wanted to put out.

BeFoUr

“If there’s something I want

I’ll take all the right wrongs”

We love ourselves some puns, so apart from being very pleased with the creative spelling of “before”, we applaud Zayn for managing to talk about “right wrongs” without sounding like a teenager trying his hand at songwriting for the first time. In Zayn’s case, the kinda cheesy cliché of “right wrongs” actually makes total sense – Zayn may have taken a bit of a detour on the way to this album, but he’s finally doing what he loves and we admire him for that. A lot.

dRuNk

“Wasted every night

Gone for every song

Faded every night

Dancing all night long”

On first glance, these lyrics may look like they’re coming straight from the latest Pitbull song, but they’re a lot more than that. dRuNk is one of the most emotional songs on the album, the track reminding us of that feeling you get when you feel a friendship or a relationship slipping through your hands and you’re not yet ready to give up – a feeling that Zayn manages to capture perfectly.

INTERMISSION: fLoWer

“Jab tak is mohabbat ka phool na khilay

tab tak is dill ko sukoon na miley”

“Until the flower of this love has blossomed

this heart won’t be at peace”

Do we really need to explain this one? Not only is it a beautiful line, but how extremely, utterly immensely cool is it that Zayn sings this in Urdu? Words can’t even describe how proud we are of him for this one.

rEaR vIeW

“Heard about all the miles you’ve gone

just to start again

Heard about all that you’ve been through

and it sounds like you need a friend”

Now this song may sound like Zayn is talking to a love interest, but don’t these lines sound like something Zayn has wanted someone to tell him? We think they kinda do and it breaks our hearts just a little bit.

fOoL fOr YoU

“I know, I know given a chance I’d do it again

Cause I can’t help myself

Cause I can’t stop myself

I just love being a fool for you”

Let’s not pretend we haven’t all been here at least once. You know things are messed up between you and your partner, or between you and your friends and family, and you’re fully aware of the fact that you should do something about it, but for some reason you just can’t. Sadly, Zayn isn’t providing us with a solution for this crappy feeling, but at least it’s good to know that even Zayn Malik goes through the same things as us mere humans.

tRuTh

“My luck’s on the game

Can’t find a way through

Don’t know how many times

I’ve had to say this to you

This ain’t my scene

This weren’t my dream

It was all yours”

tRuTh is a particularly painful song for those of us who are still coming to terms with the seemingly permanent rift between Zayn and the remaining members of One Direction, and we’re not gonna pretend we haven’t cried whilst listening to tRuTh at least once. Let’s not analyse these lines too deeply and just move on.

BLUE

“I need somebody to

love me blue”

While a lot of the songs on Mind of Mine paint Zayn as this incredibly confident man who’s gonna make sweet love to you at any given moment, BLUE is the track where Zayn shows that yes, sometimes there are actual feelings involved. And yes, sometimes Zayn just wants to wax-poetic about eyes and smiles. And yes, sometimes the Bradford bad boy just wants to be loved and taken care of.

Golden

“The choices we make change the path that we take

but I know

That somewhere out there there’s a path that we chose

There’s a life that we share, there’s a love and it grows”

Thanks Zayn, for effectively killing us all with the last track of the album. While these beautiful lines are obviously open to interpretation, we’re just gonna go ahead and make it extra painful for ourselves by imagining Zayn’s talking about an alternate universe where he’s still a part of One Direction and everything is fine and dandy between the five lads. Hand over the tissues, please and thank you.
