Matthew Knowles, the father of Beyoncé, has revealed he has breast cancer.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Matthew sat down with Good Morning America to talk about his recent diagnosis. He got candid with Michael Strahan regarding his battle and the effect it is having on his family.
The sneak peek doesn’t give much away but certainly tugs at the heartstrings. Strahan asks the most critical question, setting the tone for the interview.

The full interview will air on Wednesday morning and appears to solely focus on Matthew’s diagnosis, as well as treatment. October 1st is the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness month, so it is fitting Matthew let his news be announced today.
Matthew does not have the best relationship with Beyoncé or her sister Solange. The former Destiny Child’s manager was married to wife Tina Knowles, the girls’ mother, for 31-years. Their union went bust when it was revealed Matthew had fathered a son with another woman, during his marriage to Tina.
In 2013, Matthew secretly married Gena Charmaine Avery, but it was reported neither of his daughters attended the wedding. Over the years, he has tried to mend his relationship with Beyoncé, and Solange, as well as his son Daniel Julez Smith Jr age 14.
Matthew Knowles has been diagnosed with breast cancer. It is extremely rare for men to get this particular form of cancer, but it does happen. In recent years, there has been more focus on men’s breast cancer because it only occurs in about 1% of people who suffer from the disease.

A Million Little Things, ABC’s hit drama, highlighted male breast cancer last year during its first season. It was an empowering storyline that was well-crafted and executed, shedding light on the disease.
The reason it is imperative to bring awareness to men having breast cancer because it also has a high mortality rate. Since the awareness is low, men frequently go undiagnosed until it is too late to beat the disease. Men should be giving themselves self-exams, just like women.

Beyoncé’s father Matthew telling his story during this pivotal month will no doubt bring much-needed awareness to male breast cancer. His connection to Queen Bey will bring a lot of attention to the disease, which is something positive that could come out of his diagnosis.
